¡Atención, amigos del más allá y del más acá! Se acercan dos de las festividades más esperadas del año y no, no hablamos de Navidad. Nos referimos al colorido y aromático Día de Muertos y al espeluznante y dulce Halloween. Aunque a primera vista podrían parecer primos lejanos, en realidad son como el chile y el chocolate: ambos deliciosos, pero muy diferentes. Acompáñame a explorar estas dos festividades en un duelo de risas y tradiciones.
Attention, friends from both the beyond and the here and now! Two of the most anticipated festivities of the year are approaching, and no, we’re not talking about Christmas. We refer to the colorful and aromatic Day of the Dead and the spooky, candy-filled Halloween. At first glance, they might seem like distant cousins, but in reality, they’re like chili and chocolate: both delicious, but very different. Join me in exploring these two holidays in a duel of laughter and traditions.
Orígenes (¡De lo más ancestral!)
- Halloween: Todo empezó con los celtas y su fiesta del Samhain. Se creía que en esta noche, los espíritus se daban un roll por el vecindario. Así que, ¿qué hicieron los vivos? Disfrazarse de monstruos para que los fantasmas pensaran: “¡Ah, es solo otro colega del más allá!” y seguir su camino.
- Día de Muertos: En México, mucho antes de que llegaran los españoles, ya se estaba organizando una fiesta de muerte. Pero no de miedo, sino de recuerdo y amor hacia aquellos que se nos adelantaron en el viaje al Mictlán. Con la llegada de los europeos, la fiesta tuvo un remix y se mezcló con tradiciones católicas, ¡y voilà!, nació el Día de Muertos.
Origins (Deeply Ancestral!)
- Halloween: It all began with the Celts and their Samhain celebration. It was believed that on this night, spirits would roam the neighborhood. So, what did the living do? They dressed up as monsters so the ghosts would think: “Ah, just another fellow from the beyond!” and move along.
- Day of the Dead: In Mexico, long before the Spanish arrived, a death celebration was already in the works. But not one of fear, rather a commemoration and love for those who embarked on the journey to Mictlán before us. With the arrival of the Europeans, the celebration got a remix and blended with Catholic traditions, and voilà! The Day of the Dead was born.
La Moda de la Temporada (Disfraces y estilos)
- Halloween: Si tienes una sábana vieja, ¡ya la hiciste! Puedes ser un fantasma. Pero si quieres ser el rey o reina de la fiesta, ¡a lucir ese disfraz de zombie, bruja o superhéroe!
- Día de Muertos: ¿Has visto a la Catrina, esa señorita esquelética con un sombrero enorme y vestido de gala? Eso es alta moda del más allá. Y no olvides el maquillaje de calavera, ¡para que luzcas muerto… pero con estilo!
Season’s Fashion (Costumes and Styles)
- Halloween: Got an old sheet? You’re set! You can be a ghost. But if you want to be the king or queen of the party, show off that zombie, witch, or superhero costume!
- Day of the Dead: Have you seen La Catrina, that skeletal lady with a huge hat and gala dress? That’s high fashion from the beyond. And don’t forget the skull makeup – look dead… but with style!
Snacks y Comilonas (Porque muertos o vivos, todos comemos)
- Halloween: “¡Dulce o truco!” y, si no me das dulce, ¡cuidado con la travesura! Las calles se llenan de pequeños monstruos con bolsas esperando ser llenadas de caramelos, chocolates y gomitas.
- Día de Muertos: Aquí las estrellas son el pan de muerto y el chocolate caliente. Pero no te sorprendas si ves un taco o una botella de tequila en una ofrenda, porque los difuntos también regresan con antojos.
Snacks and Feasts (Because dead or alive, we all eat)
- Halloween: “Trick or treat!” And if you don’t give me candy, watch out for the trick! The streets fill with little monsters with bags waiting to be filled with candies, chocolates, and gummies.
- Day of the Dead: The stars here are the “pan de muerto” (bread of the dead) and hot chocolate. But don’t be surprised if you see a taco or a bottle of tequila on an altar, because the departed also come back with cravings.

- Halloween: Imagínate ser un verdadero fantasma, regresar a la tierra y encontrarte con niños disfrazados. “¡Espera un minuto, ese soy yo, pero en versión miniatura y de plástico!”
- Día de Muertos: Cuando los antepasados regresan y ven su ofrenda: “¡Ay, Carmelita! Me pusieron los tacos sin salsa. ¿En serio creen que en el más allá no nos gusta el picante?”
The Funniest Bits
- Halloween: Imagine being a real ghost, returning to Earth, and encountering kids in costumes. “Wait a minute, that’s me, but in a miniature and plastic version!”
- Day of the Dead: When ancestors return and see their altar: “Oh, Carmelita! They put the tacos without sauce. Do they really think we don’t like spicy in the afterlife?”
Ya sea que estés poniendo tu mejor cara de susto para pedir dulces, o que estés bailando al ritmo de “La Llorona” frente a una ofrenda, lo que importa es disfrutar y recordar con amor y humor. Y recuerda, en estas fechas, la muerte no es motivo de tristeza, ¡sino de celebración!
